Reducing ER Wait Times In London McGuinty Government Invests In Strategy To Improve ER Efficiency

NEWS                                              May 22, 2009

London residents will benefit from more than $1.1 million in funding to help London Health Sciences Centre reduce emergency room (ER) wait times.

For the second year in a row, the Ontario government is funding a comprehensive ER strategy which includes:

  • More than $900,000 to help LHSC reduce ER wait times at the University site as part of the province-wide Pay for Results program.
  • Over 277,000 to help LHSC ease ambulance offload delays by providing dedicated nurses to care for patients who arrive at ERs by ambulance at both the University and Victoria sites.

The province-wide ER strategy also includes:

  • $10 million for community projects.
  • $7.5 million for a performance fund targeting emergency rooms facing the largest challenges. The fund provides information technology enhancements and coaching teams to improve hospital efficiency.
  • $4 million to promote appropriate alternatives to the ER.

These initiatives are aimed at improving the overall performance of hospital ERs across the province.

QUOTES

“We’re working with the province’s hospitals to ensure our ERs are running as efficiently as possible,” said Deb Matthews, MPP London North Centre. “Our ER strategy, along with our improvements to community services for seniors, will help to reduce the amount of time people spend in the emergency room.”
