Community Organization Receives Support To Expand Successful Pilot Program Across Province Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration awarded Ontario Trillium Grant image

The Province of Ontario was proud to announce an investment supporting the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration on December 7 towards expanding The Shared Journeys Project into new communities across the province. This additional funding was made possible in part with support in the form of a two-year, $285,300 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario and a $70,000 grant from the Ministry of the Attorney General.

“I’m proud that this investment will help expand the excellent support and services of the Shared Journeys pilot program to Ottawa, York and Kingston,” said the Hon. Deb Matthews, MPP for London North Centre. “This project has been incredibly successful in eliminating violence and providing social and spiritual support to children and their families."

The Shared Journeys Project was developed to share the critical knowledge gained through 10 years of successful collaboration between the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration and the Children’s Aid Society of London and Middlesex and a wide range of partners within the Muslim Community, including the: Muslim Family Service Ottawa, Islamic Society of Kingston, and the Social Services Network.

“We are grateful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Ministry of the Attorney General for supporting us to share our joint journey with the Children’s Aid Society of London and Middlesex with other communities in Ontario. The impact of this initiative will be significant in establishing successful collaborative relationships between the respective communities and Children’s Aid Societies, and promote an increased understanding that will enable child protection services to build their capacity to work with immigrant and refugee populations,” said Mohammed Baobaid, Executive Director for the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration.

“The effective leadership provided here is preventing violence. I am pleased it will be expanded,” said the Hon. Chris Bentley, MPP for London West.

The goal of the project is to share the journey and best practices that have informed the creation of the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration and its vital working relationship with child protection services in London.

The Children’s Aid Society of London and Middlesex is committed to this collaborative model of practice. This partnership has resulted in a reduction in the number of Muslim children being admitted to the care of the Children’s Aid Society. “We believe that this model will inform our practices with other communities in London and across the province,” said Jane Fitzgerald, the Executive Director for the Children’s Aid Society.
